Silk Way Rally Stage 5: Nikolaev Takes Revenge, Nifontova has Tough Time

Comunicato Stampa disponibile solo in lingua originale.

The competitors of the greatest #rally in Eurasia covered more than half of the distance. There are four days before the Ceremonial Finish.

The fifth stage of the International #silkwayrally connected #orenburg and #samara with a 557-kilometer route. This time the competitive distance was 226 kilometers, and one section passed along the Platovskaya Lesnaya Dacha — a unique genetic reserve and one of the main monuments of afforestation, created at the end of the 19th century.

At the start of the selective section there was a concert especially for the spectators and a meeting with Vladimir Chagin, the Head of the International Project #silkwayrally, who delivered a welcoming speech. And after the stage finish Dmitry Azarov, the Governor of the #samara Region, and Lidia Rogozhinskaya, the Acting Minister of Sports of the #samara Region, visited the #rally bivouac.

Fifth Consecutive Victory for Vasilyev Vladimir Vasilyev, one of the most experienced and titled drivers among the #silkwayrally competitors, continues to dominate in the Car standings — at the fifth stage crew No. 201 of the VRT team secured the fifth victory. Andrey Rudskoy from the NG-Energo Team lost eleven minutes to the #rally leader and now loses to him more than an hour in the overall standings.

The third and fourth places in the T1 standings are still occupied by the GAZ Raid Sport drivers Alexey Ignatov and Alexander Rusanov — teammates are separated by almost 13 minutes, but they are about an hour behind Rudskoy. Bogdan Vavrenyuk rounds out the classification in the GAZ-67.

Anton Melnikov in the Toyota LC 200, the leader of the general classification, set the best time in the T2 category. As a result, the crew of the Podmoskovye Team increased the lead over Leonid Petrov in a similar car to 33 minutes.

Three crews of the Federation of automobile sport of Turkmenistan in the Nissan Patrol cars follow. Maxatmyrat Danatarov is third, Merdan Toylyyev is fourth, and Shamyrat Gurbanov is fifth. The sixth position is held by Evgeny Sukhovenko from the LADA Sport ROSNEFT Raid, ahead of Mansur Enikeev and Dmitry Voronov. Troubles of Anastasia Nifontova

The main #event of the day in the SSV standings was the problems of #anastasianifontova, the contender for the victory. At the beginning of the selective section the drive shaft broke the engine of the Can-Am Maverick through, oil leaked out and the crew had to get to the bivouac with outside help, without entries at the controls. Crew No. 207 is thus classified with a score of 25 hours.

In the meantime, the fight for the stage victory was between Dmitry Mordkovich and Sergey Karyakin. At the first point Mordkovich was faster, at the second one Karyakin seized the initiative, but at the finish line the best time with an advantage of 57 seconds still remained with Mordkovich.

Karyakin is still leading in the overall standings, and Roman Rusinov became his main pursuer. At the fifth stage the debutant of the #silkwayrally set the third time and is 14 minutes behind the Ural racer. Alexey Cherkesov rounds out the top three, followed by Andrey Novikov, Evgeny Frezorger and Dmitry Mordkovich, who is more than an hour behind Karyakin as a result of all the misfortune that befell him at the beginning of the #rally.

Nikolaev Takes Revenge The closest and most intense competition at the fifth stage took place in the Truck standings. #andreykarginov, #sergeyvyazovich and #dmitrysotnikov were the first to start, and they finished within one minute. At the same time, 60 kilometers before the end of the selective section a piece of the rear left wheel tread came off at Vyazovich's truck, Sotnikov lost some time due to difficult navigation, and Karginov, who opened the track, drove at a cautious pace.

However, in the end the best time was left for #eduardnikolaev. After two punctures and a windshield broken the day before, this KAMAZ-Master crew started later than their main rivals and, as a result, drove a minute and a half faster than anyone else. The second time was set by Vyazovich, the MAZ-SPORTauto leader, Karginov became the third, and Sotnikov scored the fourth result.

In the overall standings the gap between Vyazovich and Karginov is still a little bit less than seven minutes, and Nikolaev reduced the gap to just over 17 minutes. Sotnikov, who occupies the fourth place, is behind the TOP-3 by about 20 minutes and is 18 minutes ahead of the One Belt One Road crew in the KAMAZ driven by #houhongning. Sergey Kupriyanov driving the KAMAZ sports truck running on gas-diesel fuel is in the sixth position. Pavlenko Unchallenged Again Oleg Pavlenko in the KTM 500 EXC was the fastest among motorcyclists for the fourth day in a row. Despite the fact that a wasp flew into Oleg's helmet at the selective section, he covered the distance six and a half minutes faster than Ilya Shcheglov. Pavlenko outpaced Dmitry Kalinin — his main rival in the G-Moto Challenge standings — by 24 minutes and a quarter and in the general classification he leads with an advantage of about an hour and a half.

In the Moto standings Shcheglov, who won the first-ever Silk Way Snow Journey Snowmobile Rally-Raid in winter, holds the first line. The closest pursuers — Vyacheslav Pashchenko and Nail Khubbatullin — lose more than an hour to the Doc_32 team driver, but the gap between them is a little bit more than 17 minutes.

Alexander Gilemov became the fastest among quad biker. He managed to win back about 12 minutes from the category leader Anatoly Kuznetsov, but the gap between the riders is still more than an hour. Danil Loginov is in the third place, 44 minutes behind Gilemov.

Grand Tour in Orenburg

The Small Towns of Russia Grand Tour competitors passed a 54-kilometer selective section — everyone had a high and confident pace, then they moved on to the quests prepared by the Organizers.

The crews first had to find the oil capital of the #orenburg region — Buzuluk and take a picture at the famous Pumpjack sculpture. Then the competitors had to get to the #orenburg Women's Gymnasium, that was built back in the 19th century at the request of the Governor-General Nikolay Kryzhanovsky and became the hallmark of the city. As part of the final task, the teams went to the water tower, on the roof of which there is a weather vane with a deer — another symbol of #orenburg.

Quotes

Vladimir Vasilyev (VRT), "In terms of complexity, the day was much easier than the day before. There were Straight paths, a fairly fast track, although there were ravines, hillocks and other difficulties. Our average speed was 104 kph. We drove the distance in one breath, if not for the annoying overtaking in the dust — it was the main challenge. As a result, we lost a lot of time. We ran into trucks twice — first we caught up with the KAMAZ, then we were behind Vyazovich's MAZ. On a straight, due to the difference in maximum speeds, we managed to bypass them sideways across the field. It was 20 km before the finish line, and in the end the three of us finished in a minute after each other."

Andrey Rudskoy (NG-Energo), "It's an excellent selective section: steering, live, speedy – it's cool! The air conditioner works, but I don't have enough of it — I'm driving with the window open. We did a couple of overtakes, so we were in the dust — of course, you can't do without it. The weather is better today — the sun is not so hot; the breeze blows off the dust. So, it's easier for both vehicle and us. It even rained a little bit, although it didn't wet the track."

Dmitry Mordkovich (Team Marina Oparina), "For some reason, today is harder for me. At first it seemed to be ok, then we drove around #anastasianifontova without stopping. They were sitting near the wheel, apparently, something broke, but everything is fine with them. On the one hand, I was upset, because she did great. On the other hand, I realized that I had to rush. Then there were straights, we overtook Sergey Karyakin — apparently, they took care of the car, rushed-rushed, and our belt broke. Despite the wind, the car overheats terribly, everything just boils. But we are driving actively."

Roman Rusinov (G-Drive Racing), "There are very interesting selective sections today, a fast speedy track, with a lot of traps. It's very treacherous track, but so cool! There were hidden holes and difficult navigation, but the co-driver did a good job. Our variator sometimes overheated, but it saved us — in the place where #anastasianifontova got into a large ditch, we drove up to the corner very carefully due to overheating. During every braking the belt overheated, so it was crucial for us not to slow down, but to drive up to the corner smoothly."

Eduard Nikolaev (KAMAZ-Master), "Today the windshield stood out, in some places the air leaked out. At the heavy off-road we were worried that it would fall. The selective section was fast and dynamic. There was a lot of dust, we started at the back of the field because we lost a lot of time yesterday. The navigation is very good today. There were difficult interchanges, where the co-drivers did a great job. The Organizers tried to make today's selective section very interesting. It's a pity, it's just starting to rain. I usually expect something unusual on the track — rain, mud, salt marsh. It's great, it makes the #rally challenging."

Sergey Vyazovich (MAZ-SPORTauto), "Today we were in troubles for the first time in the entire #rally. We approached #andreykarginov, and at that moment, 60 kilometers before the finish line, the tread from the rear left wheel went off. We were going to change it, but found out that there was air. We decided to take a chance, because the replacement is 6-8 minutes. As a result, we completely slowed down the pace — in the right corners we had to almost completely stop. But two minutes were lost without a protector, so the risk was justified. It's good that it turned out like this — I hope it will be our biggest trouble for the entire #rally."

Andrey Karginov: "Today it wasn't hot, it was comfortable, although the tension is felt. Today we've started first, and our novice co-driver Ivan Malkov has worried about it. But the whole crew concentrated, because we needed to win back time. So we made virtually no navigational mistakes. Sometimes we throttled down to drive confidently and not to miss anything. We cut very carefully."

Dmitry Sotnikov: "It was a very fast stage. I can't say there were only straights and there was a lot of navigation. We made a couple of mistakes. It seemed that we saw #sergeyvyazovich, but got lost in two places, losing a few minutes. We tried to drive clearly, tried to minimize losses."

Hou Hongning (One Belt One Road), "Every day, mechanic Sergey Krenev teaches me — he helps with driving, explains some nuances, and thanks to this we make progress. My main goal is to reach the finish line. Today we had to change the wheel, on which we lost six minutes, and twice we made a mistake in navigation — we went to the wrong place. For my part, I constantly recommend all Chinese drivers to come to the #silkwayrally. When the #event again passes through two countries — from Moscow to Beijing, a lot of Chinese crews will take part in it, because now sports in China are developing very dynamically. Of course, we don't have big teams that drive trucks yet, but we have many that drive cars."

Oleg Pavlenko, "The stage went well, I didn't get lost, although sometimes I lost my direction in the steppe. Once my navigation failed, and I got lost, I couldn't find a reference. At the speed limit zone, I stopped several times to understand where I was. The selective section is beautiful, long, smells like wormwood somewhere. The track was hard and bumpy, but in some places it was softer. The terrain has changed, all my skills didn't work here. The ravines are absolutely unexpected — in one place I just successfully jumped over it. Shortly before the finish line, I jumped and there was a pause in the air: what will happen next? I landed fine. Once a wasp flew into the helmet, I had to stop and shake it out. Yesterday a wasp stung me on the cheek, but not only me, many guys."

Ilya Shcheglov (Doc_32), "Today the track was more difficult to navigate — we got lost a little bit. Cars and quads were looking for the road. There are many field roads, we drove in a horst piste — there were no roads at all, only fields and sunflowers. I fell once, but at a low speed, without damage. But the track is very high-speed, we rode all the time at maximum speed. There were no fords, only one small river and jumps. Everything is beautiful, we passed clearly."

Anatoly Kuznetsov: "It's warm and cool! The selective section is marvelous. Everything is heated, the head is heated, but it's great. There was no freshness, just like yesterday. The wind was good — it blew off the dust, it helped to overtake. At the beginning of the selective section, I stopped for about five minutes, but caught up with everyone."
