  • Earth Day donation furthers efforts to protect historic and ecological resources in Alabama, Tennessee and Georgia

Herndon, VA — Today, #volkswagen of America, Inc., announced a $100,000 donation to the #lookoutmountainconservancy, supporting the organization’s mission of land conservation through environmental education and sustainable recreation.

The #lookoutmountainconservancy works with families and landowners, assisting them on a voluntary basis to conserve lands that are locally and regionally important along the 93 miles of Lookout Mountain spanning three states: Alabama, Tennessee and Georgia.

Located just outside Volkswagen’s manufacturing facility in Chattanooga, Tennessee, the organization uses this inspiring outdoor classroom to foster love of the land and learning through youth education programs, internships, and support to conserve lands deemed critical for clean air and water. #lookoutmountainconservancy also supports the local community to establish parks, trails and natural areas for current and future generations to enjoy.

“We are very selective about who we align with,” said #robyncarlton, Chief Executive Officer at #lookoutmountainconservancy. “You might wonder how a car manufacturer and a land trust would make for suitable partners. It’s because we share core values of environmental sustainability and community engagement with our neighbor, #volkswagen, and we are excited about the work we can do together.”

Supporting the #lookoutmountainconservancy underscores Volkswagen’s sustainability commitments, making positive impact in the communities where we work and live.  The company has committed itself to the targets of the Paris Agreement with a long-term goal of becoming net carbon-neutral by 2050; to make a substantial contribution in mitigating climate change; and become a highly respected brand in sustainable mobility.

“Our goal is to become a benchmark for environmental responsibility in our industry; an automaker that inspires #people not just through our vehicles, but as a global citizen”, said #chrisglover, president and CEO, #volkswagen Chattanooga Operations LLC. “That starts here in our backyard, helping organizations like #lookoutmountainconservancy protect this land we love.”

Volkswagen’s Chattanooga production facility uses 100 percent renewable electricity. Home to one of the largest industrial solar fields of a U.S. automaker, it is a key part of the brand’s strategy to make its worldwide business net carbon neutral through e-mobility.

About Lookout Mountain Conservancy
Lookout Mountain Conservancy was founded in 1991 as a nonprofit land conservation with a focus on environmental education. We serve the #people who both live on and care about, Lookout Mountain. We help establish and maintain parks, trails, and other natural areas, while also enabling access to these areas for the recreation and enjoyment of the general public. Over the years, our work has steadily evolved to embrace community projects and needs while continuing our direct conservation work along the mountain. The original mission of the #lookoutmountainconservancy was to protect Lookout Mountain's scenic, historic and ecological resources through conservation, advocacy, recreation, and education, for current and future generations. However, connecting #people from all walks of life to Lookout Mountain and to each other has become a core tenet of our programming. Since establishing our partnership with the Howard School and launching the Intern & Leadership Program, our efforts have grown to include supporting the future opportunities for at-risk youth in our community by providing all the necessary skills for them to grow into happy, healthy, and productive adults. Moving forward we hope to expand the work of our nationally acclaimed environmental education and leadership training, provide equitable access to the outdoors, and continue to facilitate upward mobility for the youth and families in our community. Through this work, we are changing lives and molding the next generation of environmental leaders.
