#auto Union Type C Grand Prix (1936): the six-cylinder at the Ferdinand Porsche Birth House

Mladá Boleslav, 25 February 2022 – The reconstructed ŠKODA 1100 OHC Coupé (1959) will be on display at the #skodamuseum in Mladá Boleslav until at least the end of March 2022. Visitors can also look forward to the special exhibition ‘120 Years of ŠKODA Motorsport’ until 20 March 2022. It offers insights into the Czech car manufacturer’s successes on racetracks and rally courses all over the world. Another special exhibition on the successes of ŠKODA vehicles at the legendary Monte Carlo Rally runs until the end of April. In Liberec-Vratislavice, the Ferdinand Porsche Birth House is displaying a fully functional replica of the #auto Union Type C Grand Prix with a sixteen-cylinder engine until the end of March. Motorsport successes in Mladá Boleslav date back to 1901. To mark the 120th anniversary of ŠKODA Motorsport last year, the #skodamuseum and the company’s prototype construction department reconstructed the ŠKODA 1100 OHC Coupé down to the last detail. Only two examples of the closed version of the elegant racing car were built in 1959/1960, and they competed mainly on circuits in endurance races. After their motorsport careers, the cars were sold to private buyers, but both were written off in road accidents. The experts from the #skodamuseum and the prototype construction department used original parts and based the extensive restoration on historical documentation. They also relied on traditional techniques in body construction as well as modern cutting-edge technology. The now completed, fully roadworthy ŠKODA 1100 OHC Coupé will be on display at the #skodamuseum in Mladá Boleslav until at least the end of March 2022. The ‘120 Years of ŠKODA Motorsport’ exhibition documents the long motorsport tradition of motorbikes and automobiles from Mladá Boleslav until 20 March 2022 using impressive projections, historical photographs, contemporary posters, exciting texts and a ‘Wall of Fame’ with original trophies. A rally simulator also allows visitors to try their hand at rally driving.
Until the end of April, the new exhibition ‘ŠKODA vehicles’ successes at the Monte Carlo Rally’ tells the exciting story of the racing models from Mladá Boleslav at the world-famous motorsport event in the Principality of Monaco and showcases selected vehicles. A car made by Laurin & Klement entered the race as early as 1912. Since the ŠKODA RAPID Coupé came second in its class in January 1936, numerous other ŠKODA models have taken part in the Monte Carlo Rally.
The Ferdinand Porsche Birth House in Liberec-Vratislavice provides a fascinating insight into the world of the Grand Prix. A fully functional replica of the #auto Union Type C Grand Prix racing car (1936) is on display there until the end of March 2022. With its sixteen-cylinder engine and six-litre displacement, the car drove to numerous victories with a top speed of over 300 km/h.

The #skodamuseum in Mladá Boleslav is open daily from 9:00 to 17:00. A discounted combined ticket allows visitors to see both the museum and the Ferdinand Porsche Birth House in Liberec-Vratislavice. For more details, please visit muzeum.skoda-auto.cz.
