Mexico, here we come: The second fixture on the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship calendar takes the Mercedes-EQ Formula E Team to #mexicocity this weekend (12 February). Last year’s Mexican E-Prix was hosted by Puebla, 100 kilometres to the east of the capital, but for Season 8 the all-electric #racing series now returns to #mexicocity for the first time since February 2020. The drivers will once again be using the 2.606 km track variant of the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, on which they first competed in Season 6. Unlike the season opener in Diriyah, the #mexicocity E-Prix is not a double-header, so all the sessions will be compressed into Saturday. After a solid opening weekend, the Mercedes-EQ Formula E Team travel to Mexico one point behind Venturi #racing and second in the team championship. Nyck de Vries (29 points) and Stoffel Vandoorne (28 points) are second and third in the drivers’ standings behind Edoardo Mortara (33 points).
Mercedes-AMG Motorsport wins the season finale of the 2021 Intercontinental GT Challenge and takes the title in the Pro-Am class: The Intercontinental GT Challenge (IGTC) took place at the #kyalami Grand Prix Circuit in South Africa last weekend – the third time it has been staged there since the venue was included on the itinerary in 2019. Originally scheduled for December, the #kyalami 9 Hour had to be moved to February due to pandemic-related travel restrictions and therefore served as a delayed finale to the 2021 IGTC season.
After a promising pre-qualifying session on Friday morning, in the course of which Jules Gounon (FRA) in the number 89 Mercedes-AMG GT3 fielded by Mercedes-AMG Team AKKA ASP finished in first place, torrential rain set in and made the historic circuit impassable. The three-part qualifying and Superpole had to be cancelled, which meant that Gounon and his team-mates Timur Boguslavskiy (RUS) and Raffaele Marciello (SUI) automatically went through to pole position for Saturday’s race. The trio put in a flawless performance over the entire nine hours and were not tempted to follow the somewhat unconventional strategies adopted by opponents. With consistently fast lap times, the French high-performance team delivered a brilliant lights-to-flag victory, giving Mercedes-AMG its first win in the Intercontinental GT Challenge since Suzuka 2018.
Sharing the cockpit of the second Mercedes-AMG GT3 – the number 75 entered by SunEnergy1 #racing – were Mikaël Grenier (CAN), Kenny Habul (AUS) and Martin Konrad (AUT). Despite their car developing a fault in the power steering, they finished the endurance race in South Africa in a respectable seventh overall, equivalent to second place in the Pro-Am class. Because the same three drivers already had a class win from the second round of the season at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and thus scored the maximum points, SunEnergy1 #racing crowned their season by lifting the Pro-Am trophy.
Mercedes-AMG Motorsport emerges from the extended 2021 IGTC as runner-up in the manufacturers’ championship. It is now not all that long to wait before the new season of the global GT series gets underway with the Bathurst12Hour in Australia on the weekend of 13 ‑ 15 May.
