  • Honda survey reveals many drivers do not understand EVs and hybrids
  • Two-thirds of petrol and diesel car owners are confused by terminology
  • Honda introduces the e:TECHNOLOGY Translator to help motorists understand the terminology used: e:Technology Translator (Honda.co.uk)

New research from #Honda Motor Europe has revealed a knowledge gap for petrol and diesel drivers when it comes to electrified vehicles. Data collected from 5,000 current drivers of petrol and diesel cars across Europe shows that nearly two-thirds (61%) of drivers find researching hybrid and electric vehicles (EVs) too confusing, due to technical jargon (40%), no user experience or relatable real-life examples (31%) and vague terms and phrases (30%).

In the UK, despite more than half (57%) of drivers viewing electric and hybrid vehicles as the future of motoring – and a third (36%) planning to buy one in the next two years, one in ten (9%) petrol and diesel drivers would put their plans to purchase on hold when confronted with confusing terminology.

To help cut through the confusion, #Honda has created the e:TECHNOLOGY Translator, a new online tool that provides simple translations of commonly used hybrid and electric vehicle phrases and technologies.

A team of current #Honda #ev and hybrid owners have come together to help car buyers understand the benefits of choosing an electrified vehicle, translating the confusing electrified terminology by using personal experiences and anecdotes to bring it to life.

“Our research shows that many UK car buyers are being put off switching to hybrid and electric cars because they find them too confusing,” said Rebecca Adamson, Head of Automobile for #Honda. “More than a quarter of petrol and diesel drivers said they will stick with what they know because they don’t understand the technology, so it’s clear that this is an issue to address. Our e:TECHNOLOGY Translators are here to help, explaining the environmental and economic benefits of switching to an electrified vehicle, and translating the technical jargon for everyone to understand.”

Common misconceptions

As well as explaining the difference between parallel, mild and self-charging hybrids or getting into the detail on slow, fast and rapid charging, the e:TECHNOLOGY Translators also dispel common myths around hybrids and EVs.

For example, more than a quarter (27%) of those surveyed do not believe that the range of an #ev would be suitable for their day-to-day needs, while nearly a fifth (18%) of petrol and diesel drivers believe that EVs require more maintenance than their current car.

Furthermore, one in ten (9%) of European drivers believe that they cannot use the radio, heating or air conditioning when driving a hybrid in fully electric mode. As a result of these misconceptions, a third (32%) of respondents said they would not be confident driving an #ev with their current lack of knowledge.

Honda’s expanding line-up of battery electric and hybrid vehicles are already disproving many of these misconceptions, with each delivering a compelling blend of efficiency and responsive performance, as well as exceptional interior space and versatility. The brand’s advanced two-motor e:HEV powertrain technology is already standard in the all-new HR-V, CR-V, Jazz and Jazz Crosstar. Along with the awarding-winning all-electric #Honda e and the all-new Civic e:HEV which will be launched next year, #Honda is on target to electrify all its European mainstream models by 2022.
