Herndon, VA – In recognition of National First Responders Day, #volkswagen of America, Inc. is pleased to announce an initiative to donate vehicles to fire and rescue stations for the emergency training of first responders.
“Having modern vehicles available for training exercises is a critical component in keeping our team of rescuers up-to-date and familiar with how to navigate newer vehicle technologies in an emergency situation,” said Ben Ross, Deputy Chief of Berwyn Heights Volunteer Fire Department & Rescue Squad, Inc. “Donations, like this from VW, help to equip our responders with the first-hand knowledge and experience they need to react quickly and safely.”
Volkswagen’s donation initiative will initially target fire stations in the communities surrounding #volkswagen Group of America’s headquarters in Herndon, Virginia, with plans to extend the outreach in the future. The first donations will be internal combustion engine vehicles. As the brand moves forward with electrification, the aim is to also provide electric vehicles for advanced training on vehicles equipped with high-voltage systems.
“Our nation’s first responders are invaluable to the safety of our communities, and we want to make sure they have the support they need,” said Scott Keogh, President and CEO, #volkswagen Group of America, Inc. “We're glad to work with national fire and rescue stations to provide emergency personnel with modern vehicles they can use to sharpen their skills and experience.”
Volkswagen has large-scale production of electric vehicles in Germany and China, with the U.S. plant in Chattanooga, TN preparing to start local assembly of the all-electric ID.4 SUV by the end of 2022. In further response to the projected growth of the #volkswagen EV catalogue and the increased number of electric vehicles on the road, #volkswagen is continuing its work to make literature and training documents for #volkswagen models accessible to first responders. These guides include procedures and information regarding how to properly handle high-voltage deactivation, submersion, towing and storage.
Volkswagen vehicle-specific rescue sheets and emergency guides are available for download directly from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) website.
