Spa-Francorchamps, here we come: The second half of the 2021 Formula One season gets underway this weekend with the classic encounter at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps. After the two-week summer shutdown, the series resumes with a triple-header. The Belgian Grand Prix will be held for the 66th time this year and for the 54th time on the circuit in the Ardennes Forest. The premier class of motor #racing has been hosted by Zolder ten times and by Nivelles twice. A Mercedes works team has won at Spa-Francorchamps on five previous occasions, three of these victories having gone to Lewis Hamilton (2015, 2016, 2020) in a works Silver Arrow, and one each to Nico Rosberg (2016) and Juan Manuel Fangio (1955). The driver who has the most winner's trophies from the Belgian Grand Prix is Michael Schumacher (six victories), followed by Ayrton Senna (five), Jim Clark, Kimi Räikkönen and Lewis (four each). The most successful team in this #event is Ferrari on 18 wins, ahead of McLaren (14) and Lotus (eight). The absolute lap record is 1:41.252 minutes, set by Lewis on his pole lap last year. The fastest race lap is held by Valtteri Bottas in a time of 1:46.286 minutes clocked in the 2018 season.
Mercedes-AMG holds a commanding lead in the manufacturers' standings at the halfway point of the #dtm season: Two second-place finishes at the Nürburgring were enough for Mercedes-AMG Motorsport to further extend its lead in the #dtm manufacturers' standings. After four of the eight events on the 2021 calendar, the performance and sports car brand from Affalterbach takes a 40-point lead into the second half of the season, which starts on the weekend of 3 - 5 September at the Red Bull Ring. #philipellis (SUI) in the number 57 car fielded by Mercedes-AMG Team WINWARD delivered the first of the two podium successes on Saturday. He crossed the finish line in third place at the end of the 55 minutes plus one lap, but then moved up one position due to a subsequent 30-second penalty incurred by guest starter Luca Stolz (GER) of Mercedes-AMG Team Toksport WRT. Stolz was eventually classified ninth, which meant that he still finished as one of five Mercedes-AMG GT3 drivers in the Top Ten. In Sunday's chaotic race, which was punctuated by multiple safety car deployments, #danieljuncadella (ESP) in the #8 of Mercedes-AMG Team GruppeM #racing kept his cool to cross the line in P2 and register a first Top Three finish of the season. Three other Mercedes-AMG GT3s made it into the Top Ten, including Maximilian Götz (GER) in fourth, a result which takes the driver of the number 4 HRT car into second place in the drivers' standings.
Perfect debut in the #dtmtrophy: In the #dtmtrophy races, also held at the Nürburgring, guest entrant Schnitzelalm #racing recorded a second win of the season for Mercedes-AMG Motorsport. The Customer #racing outfit, which has celebrated four class victories with the Mercedes-AMG GT4 in the 2021 Nürburgring Endurance Series (NLS), had no problems adjusting to the shorter sprint duration of 30 minutes. After finishing eighth on Saturday, #marcelmarchewicz (GER) in the number 12 car worked his way up from fourth on the grid to claim victory on Sunday. Two fourth places for William Tregurtha (GBR) of CV Performance Group were enough for him to defend his lead in the overall standings.
Podium successes in other race series: For the second time in the 2021 Japanese #supergt, a team fielding a Mercedes-AMG GT3 has ended up on the podium. Tatsuya Kataoka and Nobuteru Taniguchi (both JPN) of GOODSMILE #racing & Team UKYO finished the 52-lap race on the Suzuka International #racing Course in third place.
In the Eset Cup Series, which is contested in Eastern Europe, the Jedlinski family once again enjoyed success driving the Mercedes-AMG GT3s of Olimp #racing. Marcin Jedlinski (POL) in the number 77 car secured his sixth and seventh wins of the season in the GT class by finishing as overall runner-up in both sprint races. In the 60-minute endurance race, his father Stanislaw drove the #5 to second place in the GT class.
With a P3 and a P2 respectively, Piotr Wira (POL) in the number 14 of Good Speed #racing team and Libor Milota (CZE) in the number 3 of GT2 Motorsport delivered further podium finishes for the Mercedes-AMG GT3 in the GT class. Buggyra Zero Mileage #racing were meanwhile contributing class podiums with the Mercedes-AMG GT4. David Vrsecky (CZE) and Alyyah Koloc (CZE) finished third as solo contestants in the sprint races. They then partnered each other in the endurance race to finish second in their class.
It was a podium lockout for the Mercedes-AMG GT4 in both rounds of the Russian GT4 Championship in Moscow. In the first race, Sergei Stolyarov (#44, Yadro Motorsport) won ahead of Vadim Meshcheriakov (#63, Rscar Motorsport) and Aleksandr Vaintrub (#88, Aleksandr Vaintrub). In the second race, Denis Remenyako (#13, Capital #racing Team), Stolyarov and Anton Nemkin (#83, Capital #racing Team) occupied the top three spots.
