Roczen Earns a Moto Win at Spring Creek MX

The AMA Pro Motocross series reached the halfway point of the season this weekend, with round 6 taking part at Millville, Minnesota’s Spring Creek MX Park, where #kenroczen rode his CRF450R to the victory in 450MX #moto 2, after overcoming a frightening #moto 1 crash. The German tallied eighth overall on the day, with teammate Chase Sexton earning fourth overall in the same class. Meanwhile, their CRF250R-mounted colleagues, Jett and Hunter Lawrence, were fourth and fifth overall, respectively, in the 250MX class.
After the gate dropped in the first 450MX #moto, Roczen was caught up in a first-turn crash that left him in need of medical assistance and forced him to withdraw from the #moto. Sexton was also caught up in the incident but quickly remounted and made his way from the back of the pack to seventh. Luckily, Roczen was able to take part in #moto 2, and he made some quick passes to move out front on the first lap. Sexton was sixth after one lap, but he advanced to third by lap 5 of 16. Roczen was unstoppable and secured his fourth #moto win of the season, this time 5.3 seconds in front of overall-winner Justin Barcia, who was followed by Sexton.
The Lawrence brothers suffered poor starts in the first 250MX #moto, but they advanced to the top five by the finish. Jett was involved in a #moto 2 crash that included multiple riders and left him with a damaged motorcycle, but he still salvaged sixth, one behind Hunter. That put Jett just off the overall podium in fourth, with Hunter fifth.
NOTES
- The sixth round of AMA Pro Motocross #racing, at Spring Creek MX Park, enjoyed perfect Minnesota weather, with sunshine and temperatures in the low 80º F range. That said, track conditions proved challenging for all the riders due to the extreme elevation changes and notorious sand whoops.
- Although pit access has remained closed to most of the public, VIP ticket holders had exclusive access to the paddock from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Official rider autograph sessions remain suspended, but rider posters were available.
- The Spring Creek National served as the season premiere for the NBC broadcast network, featuring a live showcase of the second and final 450 class #moto. As a result, the day’s #racing commenced one hour earlier than normal, beginning with the 450 class for the first time this season.
- Jett Lawrence posted the second-fastest time in 250MX qualifying, with a 2’09.177” in the final session, while Hunter Lawrence was seventh-best at 2’11.811”. FXR/Chaparral Honda rider Carson Mumford posted the 13th-best time.
- Ken Roczen was fastest in qualifying for the 450MX class, posting a 2’07.124” in the final session, and Chase Sexton was third at 2’07.696”. FXR/Chaparral Honda’s Coty Schock was 13th-best.
- Roczen and Sexton participated in the virtual post-race press conference Saturday evening, via Zoom. Earlier, they were joined by 250MX teammates Hunter and Jett Lawrence for the post-race media-corral interviews, which now include the top 15 finishers (previously top 10) from each class.
- Jett Lawrence was selected to undergo a post-race doping test on Saturday evening.
- Roczen remains second in the 450MX title chase, while Sexton gained valuable ground and now sits fifth. Jett Lawrence lost his hold on the 250MX red plate and sits in second, only 6 points back, while Hunter remains in third.
- The AMA Pro Motocross series will continue this Saturday, July 24, when Team Honda HRC will be at Washington’s Washougal National for round 7.
