Pajari Leads Drama-filled Day in Portugal

Comunicato Stampa disponibile solo in lingua originale.

Sami Pajari leads Junior WRC after a dramatic opening day on #rally de #portugal with three different stage winners.

Pajari took the first Wolf Stage Win Point of the day, but it was Jon Armstrong who led for a large part of Friday's stages.

The Northern Irishman played down his hopes of victory heading into #portugal but soon settled into a competitive pace taking four Wolf Stage Wins in a row between stages two and five to build up a 36.4 second lead heading into stage six. Armstrong's lead collapsed on stage six after suffering a puncture with his Fiesta Rally4 falling off its jack mid-wheel change to further compound his time loss. In total he lost four minutes and thirty seconds while falling back to fourth in the classification.

Flying Finn #samipajari regained the lead after a consistent approach to the day, in stark contrast to his performance in Croatia as Martin Koci claimed his first Wolf Stage Win Point of the #rally on the same stage.

Armstrong bounced back on Mortagua, grabbing another Wolf Stage Win Point as well as taking a sizable amount of time out of the crews ahead of him.

Portugal has shown no signs of letting up on the Junior WRC drivers so far, Will Creighton impressed many onlookers by consistently posting second placed stage times. An untimely driveshaft failure put a stop to his impressive pace on stage five with Lauri Joona suffering a similar fate on the previous stage.

Raul Badiu's day didn't start as the Romanian intended to, initially bending his steering arm early on until it eventually broke on stage four putting him on the side-lines for the rest of the day. When the Romanian's car returned to service, additional engine damage was detected resulting in Baidu having to retire from the #rally entirely.

Robert Virves struggled on Friday, suffering two punctures and was trailing Pajari by over seven minutes when he returned for the overnight service.

Martins Sesks didn't claim any stage wins throughout Friday but found himself sitting third by the close of the Lousada Super Special Stage.

Martin Koci concluded the day in second after a well measured set of drives without mistakes to keep him in the fight for victory on the Portuguese stages.

Pajari rounded out the day with a stage win on Lousada and heads into Saturday as the leader with over 25 seconds in hand to Koci. Both drivers were in contention for victory in Croatia so will be eager to chase redemption in #portugal

Maciej Woda, FIA Junior WRC Championship Manager: "Rally de #portugal has already shown its unforgiving nature on this #rally, and it is only the first day. I have been really impressed with how the crews have managed this #rally so far though. William Creighton deserves a special mention, considering his lack of international and gravel experience he has definitely raised some eyebrows within the Junior WRC team. #samipajari has also put in a very mature drive so far too and has proven that you don't need to chase all the stage win points to lead. It's unfortunate for Jon Armstrong to have lost so much time when he had his puncture, but this is just a simple fact of rallying and what makes the sport so demanding and difficult. There are a lot of stages yet to run here in #portugal and I am sure tomorrow will be just as interesting."

Sami Pajari, Junior WRC #rally Leader: "Ok it was a long challenging day, and it was the most difficult to recognise your own pace and how well you are doing. You don't want to go too fast and make a mistake or hit a lot of rocks. You also don't want to lose too much time and go too slowly. I think after all we managed to do it quite well, at least so far. Today we were just cautious with stable driving all day and nothing special from now I would say we will try to continue like this. It's such a long #rally to go so it's way too early to celebrate and we will see how it goes. I am happy at the moment though!"
