Gajser sweeps into championship lead with another race win

Comunicato Stampa disponibile solo in lingua originale.

Situated in the Lombardy region of northern Italy, the historical 12th Century city of Mantova today hosted round nine of the 2020 World Motocross Championship. Despite rain-threatening skies the races managed to avoid any downpours and the small (permitted) crowd were treated to dry conditions and exciting racing.

Race one hit the first turn with Gajser and Evans buried in the pack, putting Honda SR Motoblouz rider Jeremy Van Horebeek as the leading CRF450R on lap one and his teammate Valentin Guillod down in 17th.

Van Horebeek held onto his top ten place for the whole race, with HRC's Gajser managing a pass on the final lap, securing eight and ninth respectively for the two CRF riders. HRC's Mitch Evans initially struggled to progress through the pack, but managed to find three places in the last three laps

Gajser made amends in race two by launching his CRF450RW into a solid third place on lap one and by the halfway point HRC's Slovenian multi-World Champion pushed easily into the lead and soon pulled away to a comfortable gap of around seven seconds.

Tim's HRC teammate Mitch Evans found better form in race two moving through the field from 14th place on lap one to 9th position at the finish, one place ahead of Jeremy Van Horebeek in 10th on the Honda SR Motoblouz CRF450.

Although the initial podium results showed HRC's Tim Gajser in third place overall, rider penalties in the second moto saw three MXGP competitors docked two positions. This put HRC's MXGP World Champion in fourth overall, but he still takes the championship points lead and the coveted red-plate.

Honda Racing Assomotor's Stephen Rubini led home the CRF250Rs in Mantova with seventh overall and a continued improvement in the smaller capacity class.

Race one saw Rubini lead the Honda charge, posting 12th on lap one, followed very closely by Honda 114 Motorsport's Bailey Malkovich finding form on this rough and sandy track. The two CRF250R racers battled together for the whole moto, with Rubini coming home in eighth and Malkovich in 10th.

Race two saw Honda Racing Assomotor's Alvin Östlund battling in fourth position until mid race. He finished the moto in a very credible seventh place, with 13th overall – his best single race result in 2020. Meanwhile Alvin's teammate Stephen Rubini had a tough race, pushing through from fourteenth on lap one to ninth at the finish, giving him 7th overall and continued improvement in the MX2 class.

Honda 114 Motorsport's Bailey Malkovich struggled to find his race one performance with a poor start and eventually finish the moto in 23rd place. Bailey's teammate Nathan Crawford had a tough day with poor starts and will be hoping for improvement at the next Mantova race this Wednesday.

Tim Gajser

The first race didn't start very well as I was back in the pack and it was tough to come through the field and pass the riders as everyone is very fast. I managed to come back to eighth but I was a little disappointed because I know that the start makes all the difference. For the second race, I put a lot of focus on the start and I managed to come out of the first corner around fifth and then I made a couple of quick passes which put me into third. I was following Romain and Jorge for around 15 minutes, before I was able to make two passes to get myself into the lead. I pulled a good gap, controlled the race to take the win and I'm super happy with how it turned out. Obviously getting the red plate is a big bonus and I will try my best to hold onto it until the end of the season.

Mitch Evans

It wasn't the greatest day, although qualifying went quite well. I wasn't feeling overly comfortable on the bike as I hadn't ridden since Tuesday as I've been unwell but I was happy with qualifying. Unfortunately in race one I crashed in the first turn and then crashed a couple of laps later and was fighting all moto long to score some points. In moto two I didn't get the best start either but didn't crash, so I was still in a position to get a top 10 finish. I fought through to ninth and felt a lot better but I need to work on my starts and then I'll be able to battle with the guys at the front of the races.

Gordon Crockard - Honda Off Road Racing Manager

It's very good this weekend to see HRC's Tim Gajser regain the championship leader's 'red plate' in the premier MXGP class. Jeremy Van Horebeek and Dylan Walsh also had some very positive results at Montana today and these are promising scores for our CRF crew.

A season best MX2 result for Alvin Ostlund on the CRF250R also and a career best race finish for Bailey Malkiewicz. Stephen Rubini also continues to produce a hot-pace and top ten placings. Promising to also see Nathan Crawford score points today.
Overall, I think the track had many one-line sections with lots of tight turns early in the lap after the start. This made it hard to climb up the ranks from a low place and the pack could become very stretched out quickly.

I'm happy that our guys are healthy as some other unfortunate riders suffered some damage.
The next race is only two days away, so a quick recovery and regroup for Wednesday's race is the plan.

Let's hope for dry conditions overhead, the mud of the 2019 race is not welcome to be experienced again.
