Ian James (Team Principal):
“After the poor qualifying performance, our focus was on a clean race and gaining as many positions as possible.
Stoffel made up some positions to finish P9, but this was a long way off our expectations after practice this morning. Nyck finished P14: following a good start he lost ground in a first-lap incident. In both cases, our results fell well short of the standards we aim for.
For tomorrow’s final race we need to qualify significantly higher than we managed today. This will give us the platform for a stronger race performance and hopefully a solid finish to our debut season.”
Stoffel Vandoorne:
“That was another good recovery from P18 to P9. Two points are better than nothing, and after the poor qualifying, it was probably as much as we could expect today. It’s still frustrating, though, because I felt we had an opportunity today to do something good. Unfortunately, we didn’t maximise that opportunity. I got off to a really good start, after which we made the right calls and we were again showing some strong race performance. It’s incredible to think that tomorrow is going to be the final race of the season already. So now we have to reset tonight and go out there tomorrow to give it everything we’ve got.”
Nyck de Vries:
“That was a tough race for me. Because of the poor result in qualifying, we were having to play catch-up right from the start, which was solely due to my mistake on the apex in Turn 5. After that, the steering on the car was off and I lost my rhythm. In the race itself, I had a good start and actually caught up with Stoffel. But then things got a bit chaotic: I had a car in front of me and was hit from behind. That cost me a lot of positions. All in all, it was a difficult race.”
