Arculus at 2018 Paris Motor Show

Since the early 1900's, factories have been built to last. Now, in the midst of the fourth industrial revolution, a German startup is defying the most basic of manufacturing processes: the production line itself.

Ingolstadt, Germany – With their first implementations under way, the startup #arculus GmbH has developed an Internet of Things application for production, which defies long stablished standards. The production line is to be no more, but replaced with a two dimensional grid able to take any form and size whatsoever. All products and materials move on top of robots, which navigate throughout the factory plant using an indoor positioning system, and a camera for object detection and identification. This is a system that bases itself on doing only what you need to, and profits from complex production programs.

DEFYING REALITY

The production system of tomorrow has to be completely adaptable to changes in product, production program, and new technologies. There is a need to respond immediately to market changes, and the current phenomenon of ‘mass customisation’. For the last 100 years, production has followed Ford's lead with his production line system, built, and optimized around it. But times have changed: today is all about adaptation, being flexible, and not being left behind.

In #arculus, they believe in taking the next step, and moving forward. “The time has come for flexibility to be the new standard.”, says the CEO, Fabian Rusitschka. “We can finally orientate ourselves around meaningful functional relationships and no longer just around fixed cycle times.” The idea is to be a reality, and not just for small specific and customized runs, “The modular production system is more efficient, the greater the volumes and differentiation between the products.” This is particularly so because of the new flexibility to accommodate volume fluctuations, model changes and different technologies.
