The first Rome ePrix enjoyed huge popular success, which was notthe case for Renault e.dams as Sébastien Buemi and Nicolas Prostcould only manage sixth and fourteenth-place finishes.Buemi was one of the five drivers who qualified for the SuperPole shoot-out and he felt confident that he could do the job. But he missed a brakingpoint on his flying lap and had to be content with fifth place on the grid. When the lights went out the Swiss driver made a good start. In the firsthairpin he was unable to fend off Turvey who got past him on the outsideand he came round in sixth place at the end of lap 1. He remained amongthe front-runners poised to take advantage of any openings and snatchedfifth just before changing cars. His team carried out a flawless pit stop andhe rejoined in third place behind Rosenqvist and Bird who had adopted thesame strategy. But the second stint proved to be a nightmare for Buemi who lost positionsto drivers who had swapped cars a lap later. He was seventh with thefinish in sight and managed to pull back a place on the last lap to see thechequered flag in sixth spot.Nicolas Prost was also among the leaders in free practice, but his carlacked grip in his qualifying group. He was fifteenth on the grid and gaineda place on the first lap.He drove a good stint found himself in 12th place after the drivers hadchanged cars. He fought his way up to tenth, but he then had to cope witha lack of energy in the closing laps and crossed the finishing line in 14thposition.Renault e.dams leaves Rome in sixth place in the teams’ championshipwith 67 points. In the drivers’ ratings Buemi is still lying fourth with 60points.The next round of the FIA Formula E Championship will take place onRenault’s home turf. On 28th April, the electrically-powered single-seaterswill be back on the Invalides circuit laid out in the heart of Paris.Nicolas Prost, no. 8“The day got off to a promising start and I felt confident. Qualifying turnedout to be difficult as I had to cope with a lot of oversteer. In the race I hadproblems managing energy and that made things very complicated. It wasone of our strengths last year and we have to keep on thinking andworking together to return to our optimum level in Paris. Obviously, theseresults are not in keeping with our expectations.”Sébastien Buemi, no. 9“It’s a disappointing result. I felt that the car was handling well and I wasonly five seconds behind Bird after the first stint. But we consumed toomuch energy and we have to find out what didn’t work. We haven’t yetanalysed the data, but I hope that we’re going to find something abnormalto explain why.”Jean-Paul Driot, co-owner of the team“Our results are a bit disappointing. We obviously chose the right strategy, exactly the same as the future winner’s. But the latter didn’t have to keepdrivers behind him in the way Seb did: maybe that explains the gap at thefinish. What’s sure is that we consumed too much energy to be able to holdoff the drivers who had to cover a lap less in the second stint. Theengineers are going to analyse all the data to find out what went wrong.”Vincent Gaillardot, FE programme manager“Renault is very happy to be here in Rome in a city that’s a trail-blazer inthe field of electric mobility. We were determined to do a good job and theday got off to a great start with both cars among the front-runners in freepractice and Seb’s qualification for the SuperPole. In the race itself, we beton a strategy consisting of a shorter first stint like the two drivers whoqualified on the front row. Seb was obliged to battle in the mid-field and heused too much energy in his efforts to remain among the front-runners.This undoubtedly comprised the rest of his race, the second stint inparticular, in which he was unable to fight off the group of drivers who hada greater quantity of energy. We have to analyse how the car and ourstrategy worked to understand what we and our rivals did to ensure we’reas competitive in the race as in qualifying in the forthcoming rounds.”
