Last dance of the season at Mandalika: Sebestyen 10th in Race 2, Odendaal forced to retire

The 2021 season of the WorldSSP championship has officially ended, with the second of the two races scheduled on the Indonesian track of #mandalika. The race was run on a dry track, but was enlivened by the few drops of rain that fell immediately after the start. #petersebestyen and #stevenodendaal once again put their full potential on the track, but encountered some difficulties: the Hungarian rider took 10th place, while the South African ended the race early due to a crash.

The last day of action at #mandalika started with the warm up, held on a dry track, useful for the riders to refine their set-up in view of Race 2. In the 15 minutes available Odendaal put in 9 laps obtaining 11th position, while Sebestyen ended the session 6th with the same number of laps completed.

At 13.30 (6.30 Italian time) the lights went out for Race 2. Starting from tenth Sebestyen made up positions from the very first lap, taking seventh place. In the second phase of the race, however, the difficulties increased for Peter, who had to give up positions to pass under the checkered flag in 10th position.

A more difficult day for #stevenodendaal. After a positive start the 2021 Vice World Champion was hovering around 8th place until lap 15, when a crash without consequences at turn 10 put an early end to his last race of the season.

After two world titles won in 2019 and 2020 the Evan Bros. WorldSSP Yamaha Team finish the 2021 season by securing the vice world champion title with #stevenodendaal, and record the excellent and growing performance of #petersebestyen. Results that combined led the Ravenna-based team to take third place in the team championship, with 399 total points. The Evan Bros. WorldSSP Yamaha Team would like to sincerely thank all its partners, who made another successful season possible, and look forward to the 2022 season with great confidence.

Peter Sebestyen: "I definitely wanted to achieve more today. In the warm up things went well, but in an attempt to improve we made some changes that didn't pay off. After a few laps I lost confidence on the front so my main focus was on finishing the race. I am not satisfied but I really want to thank the team for working so hard. The season didn't end the way we wanted but we can be confident for the future".

Steven Odendaal: "Due to a small contact in the early stages of the race the front brake lever guard came loose, making it difficult for me to ride and contributing to the crash. It's not the end of the season we wanted but I have to say thanks for everything to the team: despite a few unfortunate episodes we took second place in the championship, which makes me think that with a little more good luck we can certainly improve on the results of this season. The best is yet to come".

Fabio Evangelista (Team Principal): "Things didn't go as we hoped today. Sebestyen was very confident after the warm up but in the race he couldn't keep up with the pace of the leaders, while Steven had to fight with the front brake lever guard, which loosened after a contact and was partly the cause of the crash. We are disappointed with the finish but pleased with third place in the team standings, which when added to Steven's vice world championship title is certainly gratifying. Now the goal is to work hard in the winter, to be protagonists again next year".
