Toprak Razgatlioglu on Yamaha wins WorldSBK Pirelli Estoril Round Race 1, whereas Andrea Locatelli triumphs in WorldSSP Race 1 and Mika Perez takes his first win of the season in WorldSSP 300.
Estoril (Portugal), 17 October 2020 – After no less than seventeen years of absence from the Portuguese circuit, the MOTUL FIM World Superbike Championship was back in action at the Estoril Circuit for a first and thrilling day of races at the Pirelli Estoril Round.
In WorldSBK, Turkish rider Toprak Razgatlioglu (PATA YAMAHA WorldSBK Official Team / Yamaha YZF R1), after taking his first career TISSOT Superpole, confirmed his brilliant form in the afternoon as well, finishing Race 1 on the top step of the podium. Second place went to Chaz Davies (ARUBA.IT Racing - Ducati / Ducati Panigale V4 R) on Ducati and finishing third was American Garrett Gerloff (GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Junior Team / Yamaha YZF R1). However, it was Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK / Kawasaki ZX-10RR) and his fourth-place finish that stole the show. With these thirteen precious points, the Northern Irish rider earned the title of World Superbike Champion for the sixth time in a row.
In WorldSSP, the win went to Italian Andrea Locatelli (BARDAHL Evan Bros. WorldSSP Team / Yamaha YZF R6), ahead of Philipp Oettl (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing / Kawasaki ZX-6R) and Hannes Soomer (Kallio Racing / Yamaha YZF R6), whereas in the WorldSSP300 class, the world title was assigned to Frenchman Jeffrey Buis (MTM Kawasaki MOTOPORT / Kawasaki Ninja 400). Ana Carrasco (Kawasaki Provec WorldSSP300 / Kawasaki Ninja 400), on the other hand, took the 2020 WorldSSP300 Pirelli Best Lap Award for having done the most number of fast laps – no less than four – in the season.
In WorldSBK, most of the riders chose to race on the standard Pirelli solutions, in other words, those tyres that are sold regularly on the market and accessible to motorcyclists all over the world. On the front, the most used solution was the standard soft DIABLOTM SUPERBIKE SC1 (option B), whereas on the rear, all the riders but one chose to race on the standard soft DIABLOTM SUPERBIKE SC0 (option B).
In WorldSSP, most of the riders raced with the standard soft solutions: on the front, the most used solution was the standard soft SC1 (option A), and on the rear it was the standard soft SC0 (option A).
WorldSBK Race 1:
Pole man Toprak Razgatlioglu (PATA YAMAHA WorldSBK Official Team / Yamaha YZF R1) started well, immediately moving into the race lead ahead of Garrett Gerloff (GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Junior Team / Yamaha YZF R1) who snatched a position from Michael Ruben Rinaldi (Team GOELEVEN / Ducati Panigale V4 R). Behind them were Leon Haslam (Team HRC / Honda CBR1000RR) and Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK / Kawasaki ZX-10RR) who, after starting fifteenth on the grid, made an incredible comeback ride that took him to fifth place, only to achieve a virtual podium position by the end of the fourth lap. With an outstanding pace, Scott Redding (ARUBA.IT Racing - Ducati / Ducati Panigale V4 R) was also able to climb back up through the ranks from the last spot on the starting grid, but on the seventh lap, he was forced to retire from the race due to a technical problem. In the meantime, Gerloff, Rea and Chaz Davies (ARUBA.IT Racing - Ducati / Ducati Panigale V4 R) battled it out for second with a constant back and forth of positions. In the meantime, the Turkish Yamaha rider steadily increased the gap ahead of the rest of the group, finishing first for his second win of the season. Second place went to Chaz Davies and third to American rider Gerloff to give him the second podium finish of his rookie Superbike year. Rea finished off the podium, but the thirteen points he took home for fourth confirmed his title as 2020 World Champion in WorldSBK.

WorldSSP Race 1:
Raffaele de Rosa (MV Agusta Reparto Corse / MV Agusta F3 675) took the race lead for most of the first lap with an outstanding start, but Andrea Locatelli (BARDAHL Evan Bros. WorldSSP Team / Yamaha YZF R6) was in rare form and wasted no time snatching the lead. Behind them were Lucas Mahias (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing / Kawasaki ZX-6R), Philipp Oettl (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing / Kawasaki ZX-6R) and Manuel Gonzalez (Kawasaki ParkinGO Team / Kawasaki ZX-6R) battling for the third step of the podium. However, the red flag came out on the third lap, interrupting the race, and at the second start, there was no lack of upsets and surprises. After just a few corners, contact between de Rosa and Mahias took both riders off track and ended the race early for them. Andrea Locatelli continued dominating the race, increasing the gap ahead of the rest, while the battle for second raged between Philipp Oettl and Hannes Soomer (Kallio Racing / Yamaha YZF R6). The German Kawasaki rider came out on top, finishing on the second step of the podium ahead of Soomer, who took his third podium of the season, with Andrea Locatelli finishing first.
