Top-10 for Mario Lucas and Kjell Verbruggen

Race report #emx125 Rd7, #frauenfeld - Switzerland

Monday, August 20, 2018 — F4E #racing finished the penultimate round of the #emx125 series in Frauenfeld-Gachnang with an excellent second day that saw both Kjell Verbruggen and Mario Lucas placing in the top-5. Both riders finished inside the top-10 overall while guest rider Lucas Adam added five more championship points to his tally.

As always, the #emx125 series attracted a large contingent of young talented riders from all over Europe. Among the 64 riders entering the race on Saturday was also the returning Wannes van de Voorde who’d broken his collarbone just before his home round in Lommel last month. Wannes had a local race in Koningshooikt under his belt before coming to Switzerland but clearly lacked the pace to qualify. Reigning Spanish 125cc champion Mario Lucas was the fastest of the #f4eracing bunch recording the 6th time in his group. In slightly muddy conditions both Lucas and Kjell did well and placed 10th in their respective groups. Verbruggen even might have qualified better if it was not for a spectacular tumble in one of his fast laps!

The KTM 125SX mounted Lucas got off to a solid start just outside the top-10 in the first #moto. Eventually he went on to finish 12th. In spite of a very mediocre start Lucas Adam put in a great fight to claim 16th. Kjell was put to the test when riders crashing in front of him at the start  created a huge disadvantage. Still the Dutch ace never gave up and picked up two championship points.

When the gates dropped on Sunday morning Verbruggen rocketed off the line to an excellent start behind #tomguyon and Mattia Gaudagnini. On a wet, muddy and tricky track Kjell masterfully managed his race and came home third. A career best for the  15-year old. Team mate Lucas got off to a good start as well and placed fifth after a consistent performance.  On the final day of #racing Lucas suffered a bad start and had to recover after a luckless fall in the opening lap. The young Belgian hounded the top-20 to snatch the final championship point, unfortunately he had to settle for 21st in the end.

On September 15 and 16, #f4eracing makes its final #emx125 appearance of the year in Assen, the Netherlands.

Mario Lucas: "Already from time practice I felt good. I was consistent in both motos and that’s something I had been struggling with in the last couple of races. It’s great to regain not only a good feeling but also to claim some good points for the championship. "

Kjell Verbruggen: "I’m really stoked about my weekend! The bike was perfect and I was really happy to hold on to 3rd in the second #moto. Things became already complicated in the start in the first #moto but I kept on fighting and had a good feeling, I think that showed in my rhythm! So given the circumstances I was pleased with my performance, so it was awesome to build on that in the second #moto and finish ninth overall. Big thanks to my mechanic, family and Boelie!”

Lucas Adam: "Overall a good weekend. In the first #moto I suffered a bad start but climbed back up to 17th for most of the race but I grabbed 16th in the final lap. My start was even so much worse in the second heat! To make things even more complicated I went down in the first lap. It was disappointing to have that crash or I could 've scored some points again. I think I could 've done better on a track like this but It was a nice experience and I loved riding in #frauenfeld."

Wannes van de Voorde: “It was a complicated weekend just four weeks after my collarbone fracture. Like many other riders I went over the bars on a table top jump in time practice and got banged up pretty bad. In the LCQ I got pushed wide in the start and had to remount from way back. The last stretch of the race was better but I wasn’t able to qualify. Luckily we have a bit of time now to prepare for the final round in Assen.”
