Jeffrey Herlings wins in MXGP for the twelfth time this
season and increases his advantage in the standings. Jorge Prado is victorious
again in MX2 and keeps the red plate
Lommel (Belgium), 6 August 2018 – The infamous track at
Lommel hosted the
Grand Prix of Belgium for the fifteenth round of
2018 FIM Motocross World Championship. On the soft and sandy terrain of the Flemish course
Pirelli riders were able to rely on the
SCORPION™ MX32™ Mid Soft front and SCORPION™ MX Soft rear tyres that once more allowed the Italian brand to grab overall victory in both classes. A hot and unusual climate for the region further increased the difficulties for the riders over the weekend.
Jeffrey Herlings confirmed his reputation as a sand specialist through dominating qualifying and both races in the
MXGP class. The Dutchman took the lead in the early laps and set an uncatchable pace. Thanks to this double victory
Herlings extended his championship lead to 36 points.
Antonio Cairoli was runner-up on both occasions behind the Dutchman, and is his nearest threat in the standings. There was an excellent third place for
Max Anstie who managed to get on the podium for the second time this season. Good races also for
Romain Febvre and
Glenn Coldenhoff who finished fourth and fifth respectively.
The
MX2 red plate added no extra pressure to new bearer
Jorge Prado. The young Spaniard won both races at
Lommel and continues to front the standings with an advantage that has now risen to 28 points. Both
Husqvarna factory riders,
Thomas Covington and
Thomas Kjer Olsen, finished respectively in second and third position for another
MX2 podium completely swept by
Pirelli. At least two falls slowed the progress of
Pauls Jonass, who finished fifth overall. The reigning champion sits a close second in the table.
In two weeks time the riders will attempt the
Grand Prix of Switzerland which will be hosted for the third year in a row by the spectacular
Frauenfeld circuit near Zurich.
