Race 1 of WorldSBK in Misano goes to Rea; great satisfaction for Pirelli with the new larger size tyres
On its first ever appearance, the new 125/70 size front tyre is chosen by almost all the riders on the grid in combination with the larger 200/65 rear; the Northern Irish Kawasaki rider extends his championship lead finishing ahead of Davies on Ducati and Laverty on Aprilia
Misano Adriatico (Italy), 7 July 2018 – Just moments ago, Race 1 of the MOTUL FIM World Superbike Championship ended with the victory going to Jonathan Rea on Kawasaki at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli in Italy.This gives the Northern Irish Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK rider his ninth win of the season out of a total of eighteen races held so far and places him at an advantage of 80 points over his nearest follower, Chaz Davies (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) who tried to contain the damage in this race, finishing second. An outstanding third place went to Eugene Laverty on his Aprilia.
This first race of the weekend on Italian soil was also an opportunity for Pirelli to gather important information on the new larger size solutions. In particular, the new 125/70 front tyre, developed by Pirelli in response to the work done with the larger 200/65 rear and making its first ever appearance, never even tested by the riders until the first sessions on Friday, was very popular straight away and was even the most used solution today in Race 1, being preferred by almost all the riders on the grid. This is a very important result for Pirelli who, after having developed various larger size solutions for the rear, decided to bring this new front tyre to Misano for the first time. The larger sizes, both on the front and on the rear, proved to be the Race 1 solutions and further confirmation is obviously expected from Race 2 as well, which will be held tomorrow.
In Race 1, Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) started well from pole position, but his teammate Jonathan Rea then snatched the race lead from him. Behind them were Eugene Laverty (Milwaukee Aprilia) and Chaz Davies (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati), the latter making an outstanding start that moved him up three positions. Xavi Forés (Barni Racing Team), in fifth place, was the first of the satellite team riders. In the meantime, Loris Baz (GULF ALTHEA BMW Racing Team) crashed out of the race during the first lap and Yonny Hernandez suffered the same fate shortly thereafter.
During the fifth lap, Eugene Laverty managed to overtake pole man Tom Sykes at the first corner to move into second place behind the reigning World Champion. On the following lap, the English Kawasaki rider was also overtaken by Chaz Davies, which relegated him to fourth place. In the meantime, Alex Lowes (Pata Yamaha Official WorldSBK Team) and Jordi Torres (MV Agusta Reparto Corse) both crashed, but were able to rejoin the race. Unfortunately, Lowes crashed again around mid-race distance and was forced to retire.
On the thirteenth lap, Michael Van Der Mark (Pata Yamaha Official WorldSBK Team) got the best of Tom Sykes.
During the eighteenth lap, Chaz Davies managed to overtake Eugene Laverty, moving in behind race leader Jonathan Rea. In the race finale, it was Marco Melandri's turn, overtaking Lorenzo Savadori for seventh position.
Jonathan Rea on his Kawasaki passed under the chequered flag first, thereby achieving his ninth win of the season and extending his lead in the overall championship standings. Behind him were Chaz Davies on Ducati, second, and Eugene Laverty on Aprilia with an outstanding third place finish.

The Pirelli solutions chosen by the WorldSBK riders for Race 1:
In Race 1, almost all the riders opted for the new larger 125/70 solution on the front in combination with the larger rear tyre. More specifically, no less than 17 out of the 21 riders on the grid chose to use the new X0417 SC1 development tyre (option D) on the front, which Pirelli introduced for the first time ever here at the Misano round. The four riders who did not choose this solution were Yonny Hernandez, Niccolò Canepa, Patrick Jacobsen and Michael Ruben Rinaldi who made a more conservative choice, relying on the better known V0952 (option C).
On the rear, on the other hand, practically all the riders used one of the two larger 200/65 solutions made available by Pirelli. The X0175 SC0 development tyre (option B) was the clear favourite, earning the preference of 16 out of the 21 riders on the grid. Jordi Torres and Alex Lowes preferred the new larger X0022 development solution (option C), whereas Yonny Hernandez, Patrick Jacobsen and Michael Ruben Rinaldi decided to stay with the standard 200/60 size solutions.
