Whitley, 29h November – Ryan Driver has been named Best #rugby Performer at the 2016 HITZ Awards for young players.

The award, supported by Land Rover, recognises the commitment made by youngsters on the HITZ programme as they develop themselves and their #rugby skills and demonstrate the sport’s core values which resonate with Land Rover; strength of character, determination and integrity.

Ryan takes part in the HITZ programme through Leicester Tigers. He was nominated for the award alongside Ash Carter from the Exeter Chiefs’ programme and Gloucester Rugby’s Shannon Duckett.

With help from HITZ, Ryan has been able to go above and beyond, tackling his learning disabilities and the challenges he faced when moving from London to Leicestershire with his family. He gets ten hours of #rugby coaching each week and also plays for Coalville RFC men’s first team.

Since its launch in 2013, HITZ has tackled some of the biggest challenges facing young people today; unemployment, crime and disillusionment. Land Rover is a key national partner alongside Barclays, Wooden Spoon and Comic Relief, and is proud to reward youngsters for their commitment with tours of Jaguar Land Rover manufacturing facilities, retailer work experience placements, off-road driving days and trips to Twickenham with Land Rover ambassadors.

Ryan was presented with the HITZ Best #rugby Performer award by Richard Duncan, Jaguar Land Rover UK Sponsorship and Partnerships Manager, and Land Rover Ambassador Jason Robinson. Duncan said:

“The values of #rugby and the sport itself are incredibly powerful tools to help youngsters overcome major challenges in their lives and HITZ is testament to this. Land Rover is incredibly proud to be able to support the programme since it was launched and has seen at first-hand the positive impact the programme can have.

“Ryan has a very bright future and #rugby is at the heart of that; helping him confront some major personal hurdles and develop into an accomplished player. Ryan and the other nominees should all be incredibly proud of the journey they have been on through HITZ.”

Rugby World Cup winner and Land Rover Ambassador Jason Robinson said:

“I was once in the same situation as many of the youngsters on the HITZ programme and #rugby was the motivator for me to turn my life around for the better, just as it is doing for Ryan. The sport has given me so much, not just through playing but meeting the extended #rugby family. That is one of the real successes of HITZ; it gives youngsters a support network.

“Land Rover understands #rugby and recognises the importance of rewarding the youngsters who are making major changes to their lives through HITZ.”
