Team Suzuki Press Office – September 4.

MX2 FIM Motocross World Championship runner-up Jeremy Seewer took his Team Suzuki World MX2 RM-Z250 to sixth position around a slick and wet new course at the mammoth Charlotte Motor Speedway for the penultimate fixture of the 2016 campaign. The Grand Prix of Americas took place on Saturday evening in warm conditions after torrential rain - as a consequence of the nearby Hurricane Hermine - caused Friday’s practice and qualification schedule to be washed out.

Normally a well established home for NASCAR and Drag #racing, The Dirt Track oval was an ideal spot for Charlotte’s first #mxgp and a track that was quick, jumpy and spectacular after the Friday deluge. Some 15,500 spectators filled the adjacent grandstand and hospitality units for the first of two American outings that will close the #mxgp trail for 2016.

The MX2 entry list benefitted from the presence of some leading AMA riders and the battle between Jeffrey Herlings and AMA Champion Cooper Webb was one of the anticipated draws of the meeting. Seewer, safe in the knowledge that he is confirmed as runner-up in the 2016 championship, set about trying to bury the disappointment of his outing last week at Assen and aim for an 11th podium trophy this season.

In the timed practice session preceding the races on Saturday afternoon the 22 year old classified sixth while team-mate Bas Vaessen rode his RM-Z250 to 17th place on the start line.

In the first #moto Seewer made a decent start to sit sixth after the first lap but then struggled to find his rhythm in the hustle and bustle of the opening stages and especially because he had to deal with a damaged front brake that left him without stopping power. He circulated in eighth for much of the distance but some intense activity in the pack saw him swapping positions with Benoit Paturel and Brent Van Doninck and eventually crossed the line in 10th. Vaessen went down on the first lap and was almost last; the speed of the track meaning it was hard to make up ground (and with a painful back) and the Dutchman managed to collect one point for 19th.

The day grew long and the second motos of both #mxgp and MX2 took place under The Dirt Track lights. Seewer was right with the leaders at the next launch and although he was unable to do anything about Jeffrey Herlings, Austin Forkner and Cooper Webb he battled Mitchell Harrison and Benoit Paturel for fifth place and rode to a well-earned top-five slot even though he had to endure a small technical problem that ebbed into some engine performance. Vaessen was not 100% but grasped some points with 16th spot.

Seewer sits pretty in second place in the MX2 points table and cannot be caught. In just his second Grand Prix appearance Vaessen has totalled 40 points. Team Suzuki World MX2 will move to California for the Grand Prix of USA among the daunting hills of Glen Helen for an altogether different test that will bring the 2016 term to a close next Sunday.

Jeremy Seewer:

“Really bad luck. I did quite well in Timed Practice and good on the bike, which we adjusted a bit because the track was super-fast. I felt alright but Jeffrey and those two Americans were a little bit on another level today. In the first corner of the first #moto a big rock hit my front disc and I had no brake all moto-long. I almost stopped but decided to give my best and still finished ninth and the damage was not so big. In the second #moto I could hold the pace near the front for quite a while but then I had a small problem with the bike and it was hesitating slightly. It didn't bother me too much but I had to drop the pace a little bit. Fifth was a solid result. I would like to be nearer the front but I made the best of it today.”

Bas Vaessen:

“Qualifying wasn't great, just alright. In the first #moto I made too many mistakes on the first lap and then had a huge crash and went fully into the pit lane and twisted my back. I had a lot of pain and couldn't really ride at 100% that #moto and just tried to finish. I had physio in between races and some painkillers. In the second #moto I wasted too much time behind Prado but once I passed him then my lap-times were good…overall though it wasn't a great GP. I made many mistakes and need to learn from that.”
