5th Rd. superenduro 2016 – Prague (CZE)
The fifth and penultimate round of the 2015-2016 FIM superenduro World Championship in Prague, Czech Republic, brought with it mixed fortunes for the championship contenders but allowed Red Bull KTM’s Jonny Walker to head to next week’s final round in Madrid with a narrow one-point advantage.
The victory went to US rider Colton Haaker with #ktm factory rider Taylor Robert in second on his #ktm 250 XC-F, but with equal points to the leader. It was his first ever superenduro podium. Walker’s factory teammate Taddy Blazusiak was third on what proved to be an eventful night on a tight and tricky track.
Robert: “I’m more than pleased with getting my first ever podium in superenduro. It feels like it’s been a while coming so I’m glad to have got it done. It was a wild night in Prague. Race one's crazy, everyone was pushing hard. I was upfront the whole time and kept chipping away and managed to get the win. I just tried to keep it together after that. I tied on points with Colton but he got the nod for the overall, which is a little bummer, but I’m happy to be on the box.”
Blazusiak made a great comeback to the competition after missing the last two rounds in South America because of a thumb injury. He also had a crash in the early part of the program in Prague but gained in strength and determination as the program advanced. His final race on the #ktm 350 EXC-F for a 5-7-1 result on the night was impressive and he says he is now looking forward to #racing in Madrid. Blazusiak is now seventh in the points.
Blazusiak: “It feels great to get back on the podium. It’s been tough being off the bike for so long so to come back and win a race and get third overall feels pretty good. I think tonight was a night were anything could happen. The #racing was so tight. The track was good too. Getting the start in the final race made such a difference having a clear track for a couple of laps. I’m excited now to go race Madrid.”
Jonny Walker went to Prague with a nine-point lead over rival and fellow #ktm factory rider, American Cody Webb. But both were to have their share of bad luck on Saturday night. Walker jarred his lower leg in the practice sessions. He battled through the evening program to garner as many points as possible from the three final heats and picked up a 7-6-6 result. In doing so he salvaged 29 points for overall seventh. Webb, his main rival for the title then had a DNF in the third final, to finish overall fifth. When the points were tallied, Walker escaped with a single point advantage, but the night’s winner Haaker is a major threat, just one point behind him. Webb is third and trails Walker by seven points.
Walker: “The night sort of went bad in practice. I was a weird moment in the log pit and when my foot hit the ground I felt something pop in my leg. I think it’s some muscle damage and it hurts like hell. I was in agony most of the night just trying to solider through. I had no confidence in my riding. It’s about the worst I rode all series but somehow I’m still hanging onto the championship lead by one point. I don’t feel like I’m beat yet. I’ve got through the worst of it here tonight in Prague and will do all I can to be fit for Madrid next weekend.”
Webb: “It just wasn’t quite my night tonight. Race one was busy on the track. I got close with Taddy on the rock section one lap and it messed me up. I dropped from a potential win to fourth. Race two I got second and then in race three I crashed hard in the matrix section. The crash broke my electric start, I thought I was done but somehow managed to fix it and get going. I hoped for a better night but I did close the gap to seven points to Jonny so the championship is still to play for in Madrid.”
KTM rider Manuel Lettenbichler of Germany returned to his dominant position in junior class, winning all three of his races on the #ktm 300 EXC to also wrap up the title in Prague. He currently has a 53-point advantage with one round still in hand.
It was the first time that Czech capital had hosted a round of the FIM superenduro Championship. The series will now be decided next weekend in Madrid’s famed Plaza del Toros, on March 19, 2016.
