Subaru Press Conference - Geneva Motor Show 2015

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to the Subaru stand. I am delighted to have my first opportunity to meet you all here at the world-famous Geneva Motor Show.

Let me begin with some of the latest news from Subaru. The total production of Subaru horizontally-opposed engines last month reached 15 million units. Produced continually since 1966, this boxer engine has become an icon of Subaru. This figure shows how Subaru, a small-sized car manufacturer, has earned the support of many car-buyers by relentlessly pursuing its efforts to offer distinctive value. To achieve an even greater market presence for our brand, last year we announced a new mid-term management vision titled “Prominence 2020.” This vision sets out six initiatives to enhance the Subaru brand and achieve sustainable growth and development. For example, to underline the “Enjoyment and Peace of Mind” we offer our customers, we aim to become the number-one brand for overall safety. In 2014, when we launched the new mid-term vision, Subaru’s global annual sales set a new record for the third consecutive year, reaching 913,000 units. Growth in sales has been remarkable especially in North America. We have set new records in the US for the past six years in a row. Annual growth has exceeded 20 percent in the latest three years, and sales in 2014 reached 513,000 units. We believe there are two reasons for our strong sales in the US; our products and marketing strategy. Firstly, our products are well accepted and successfully delivered “Enjoyment and Peace of Mind” to the US customers. Secondly, we have proposed how people can enrich their lives by choosing Subaru and they have great sympathy for the Subaru lifestyle. Subaru’s flagship Outback model is one of the vehicles powering this leap in sales. In 2015 the Outback celebrates its 20th anniversary. Many crossover vehicles are now available on the market, but the Outback was a pioneer in this category. Ever since the first-generation Outback, we have retained and refined the crossover concept, which combines the comfort of a passenger car, with the versatility of an SUV and the load capacity of a station wagon. The fifth-generation Outback you see here, which is already on sale in Europe, embodies this concept at an even higher level. The superior functionality and reliability demanded by Outback customers, such as ample ground clearance and load space, have been taken to another level with new features such as X-Mode. Greatly enhanced body and chassis rigidity, together with the addition of active torque vectoring, give the new Outback handling agility on a par with the WRX STI, Subaru’s high-performance icon. Such outstanding drivability is unrivalled in a high-riding crossover vehicle. It is not only the result of the many advances incorporated into the new Outback. It is also the result of stable high-speed driving and nimble cornering achieved through the synergy of two fundamental characteristics of our symmetrical all-wheel-drive system: its symmetrical power train and low center of gravity. I am confident that this new Outback will enable even more people to experience the “Enjoyment and Peace of Mind” that comes with driving a Subaru. A bolder exterior and an interior that conveys comfort and quality also serve to accentuate the presence of this flagship vehicle. Taking into account the demands of the European market, the new Outback line-up includes a version combining a boxer diesel engine with lineartronic transmission, just like the previous model and the Forester displayed at the front of the stand. This will enable even more of our customers to enjoy the environmental benefits of an engine compliant with Euro 6 emission standards and the superior drivability offered by 7-speed manual shift mode. The new Outback also features another major advance. For the first time, European specification models are equipped with EyeSight, Subaru’s original driver assist technology. EyeSight is the world’s first driver assist technology with adaptive cruise control and a pre-collision braking control that uses stereo camera technology only, to detect pedestrians and cyclists as well as vehicles. First launched in Japan in May 2008, the technology has been rolled out to Australia, North America, and now Europe. The new Outback teams EyeSight technology with powerful automatic braking to avoid collisions at relative speeds up to about 50 kilometers per hour. These safety features earned it the top five-star rating in 2014 Euro NCAP results. This is one example of how Subaru is establishing itself as the “safety brand” through advances in safety performance, which is a key goal of the new mid-term management vision I mentioned earlier. Finally, I must tell you about another vehicle on the stage that symbolizes Subaru’s efforts to produce automobiles offering “Enjoyment and Peace of Mind”. This is the Levorg, which went on sale in the Japanese market in June last year. In just seven months it has already achieved sales of 30,000 units in Japan, and has been acclaimed for superb drivability and safety. Following on from its strong sales in the Japanese market, we chose Europe as the site for the overseas debut of the Levorg. To raise the presence of the Subaru brand, we considered it vital to ensure that the value of the Levorg is recognized in the European market, which is characterized by high-level competition among a large number of automakers. Prior to the launch of the Levorg on the European market in autumn this year, we are previewing the European specification model here at the Geneva Motor Show. Detailed specifications will be released as they become available. In particular, we aim to offer our European customers values such as “Driving pleasure”, “Safety”, and “Versatility”. The Levorg will be equipped with our newly developed 1.6 liter direct injection turbo boxer engine. Please take this chance to view the European specification Levorg.
