ELECTRANT – tomorrow’s mobility infrastructure Electric motors have always been more efficient than combustion ones. It is therefore no surprise that horseless carriages were also rapidly conceived and designed as electric carriages. The professional fire brigade of the city of Berne goes back to such a development. The first full-time fire brigade man was the driver of an electrically-powered fire brigade truck more than a century ago. Like the first combustion vehicles, the first electric cars had a basic problem: high consumption with limited autonomy. However, this problem could be solved relatively easily and efficiently by transporting a tank, while there was a shortage of electric charging stations. Consequently, in the twentieth century automotive mobility developed on the basis of the combustion motor and an immense infrastructure was built for it.
