Bookings open for the 2018 edition of Alex Gramigni’s Old School Racing powered by Pirelli & Yamaha

The ex-World Champion will hold 12 days of track riding classes at the circuit of Mugello, Italy, using 2018 Yamaha YZF-R1 equipped with Pirelli DIABLO™ Superbike SC3 slick tyres

Milan, 26 April 2018 – Following the fully-booked success of last year’s exclusive track riding school by ex-World Champion Alex Gramigni, Old School Racing powered by Pirelli & Yamaha returns with an enhanced calendar of events held at the beautiful Tuscan circuit of Mugello.

With the continued support of Pirelli and Yamaha, Old School Racing, with Alex Gramigni’s highly qualified and back-to-basics teaching methods, has become one of the most exclusive experiences on the track riding school calendar. His tried and tested formula provides each participant with the use of a brand new Yamaha YZF-R1 2018 machine equipped for the Old School Racing event with the same Pirelli DIABLO™ Superbike SC3 slick racing tyres, as used in the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship.

Packed with YZR-M1 MotoGP technology, a crossplane engine, short wheelbase chassis and high-tech electronics, the 2018 Yamaha YZF-R1 was born for the track and is ready to take the participants riding to a new level. And its track record speaks for itself – with an Endurance World Championship title in 2017, a record breaking hat trick of victories at the prestigious Suzuka 8 Hours, as well as 2017 Le Mans and Bol d'Or 24 Hours race wins to its credit. 200 hp, 199 kg and a 1405 mm wheelbase give an insight into its capabilities. Along with this, the Inertial Measurement Unit constantly senses chassis motion in 3D, creating controllability over traction, slides, front wheel lift, braking and launches. And its updated Quickshift System (QSS) offers clutchless downshifting as well as upshifting. The YZF-R1s which are part of the Old School racing fleet are also made available with the Yamaha Communication Control Unit (CCU) with wireless remapping capabilities. This system allows participants to log their track sessions and download and upload data from their bike.

The SC3 compound of the DIABLO™ Superbike slick racing tyres was developed by Pirelli as a result of the years of experience acquired while participating in the FIM Endurance World Championship and the many victories in competitions such as Le Mans 24 Hours or the Bol d’Or. It is therefore a solution developed above all for use in all those cases where a high level of resistance and longer lasting performance than those which other compounds can offer, is needed. As regards the rear, compared to the SC2 which is the closest solution to it in terms of characteristics, the SC3 offers greater durability and more constant performance in all ranges of use, at the cost of peaks in performance.
On the front, the SC3 is versatile and offers constant performance. In detail, compared to an SC1 it ensures a longer mileage but at the cost of grip and contact feeling while if compared to the SC2 it continues to offer a mileage but at the price of less driving precision.

The full-day course includes theory lessons on everything from correct body position, to the dynamic behavior of the Yamaha and how to get the most out of the Mugello circuit. This is complemented with on-track sessions that gradually refine riding style lap by lap, using on-board video footage to debrief throughout the day.

The exclusivity of the course is underlined by the fact that there are just six participants per day, meaning that Alex Gramigni and his team are fully dedicated to each and every rider.

The course, which costs 1500 euros vat included, includes the exclusive use of a 2018 Yamaha YZF-R1 for the day, Pirelli tyres, fuel, lunch and photography.
Among all those who will participate in the course this year, Pirelli will randomly draw a participant who will be honored with a set of motorcycle tyres of his choice among those present in the current Pirelli catalogue.
