“FUTURPIAGGIO” EXHIBITION

From 21 April to 10 June 2018, the Piaggio Museum will host “FuturPiaggio - 6 Italian lessons on mobility and modern life”, inspired by the book of the same name by Jeffrey Schnapp, created to celebrate the Piaggio Group's 130th anniversary

As the exhibition areas and permanent collections undergo expansion, the Piaggio Museum opens a window on the history and future of mobility, inaugurating the exhibition entitled “FuturPiaggio - 6 Italian lessons on mobility and modern life”, open to the public from 21 April to 10 June 2018.

Thanks to a high-impact exhibition pathway, inspired specifically by futurism and the celebration of motoring, the show immerses the visitor in the spirit of book, written by Jeffrey Schnapp (Professor of Romance languages and contemporary literature in the Department of Architecture and Design at Harvard) to celebrate the 130th anniversary of the Piaggio Group. A work that analyses the concept of mobility developed by the Group over the course of its long history, while also looking to the future of the firm that is now Europe's leading player in the lightweight mobility arena.

The exhibition retraces key episodes in Piaggio history, taking in the most iconic products and events surrounding its people and brands (Vespa, Piaggio, Gilera, Moto Guzzi, Aprilia, Derbi, Scarabeo and Ape), always at the cutting-edge of innovation. A story that now looks to the future thanks to Piaggio Fast Forward, the Boston-based firm with which the Piaggio Group has started to explore a world that applies robotics to human mobility.

130 years of history, from the origins of Moto Guzzi to the lofty heights of motorcycle technology developed in Aprilia Racing, from the birth of Vespa to confirmation of the Piaggio brand and the internationalisation of the Group. The pre-war period also plays an important role and, like the other sections of the book, is narrated through fascinating images from the time, many of which have not been seen before, that recount what is often a surprising story.

The visitor thus embarks on a real journey through 130 years of history: five big “open books” guide guests as they discover five of Schnapp's six Italian lessons. Each of these sections embraces one vehicle from the current range of Piaggio Group brands. Lightness is represented by the Vespa 946; The Aprilia RSV4 is Speed, the Piaggio MP3 is Precision. The anti-conformist Moto Guzzi MGX-21 is Visibility, while the Ape Calessino represents Multiplicity. The final room, comprising captivating immersive projections, is dedicated to the sixth and final lesson, the Future.

The walls of the main room feature the “Movability manifesto”, introductory texts from the book written by the author, Jeffrey Schnapp, and Piaggio Group President, Roberto Colaninno, as well as texts and images from the book's Dictionary section. Lastly, a touchscreen allows the public to browse the book, while a hard copy is also exhibited inside a protective case.
