Silver coin celebrating the Fiat 500 released today

  • Italian State Mint releases new coin celebrating the iconic #fiat #500.
  • Coin has a 5 Euro face value* and marks the legendary model's 60th anniversary.
  • Both faces depict the 500's unmistakable profile.
  • Only 4,000 will be minted, making the coin a true collector's item.

The Italian State Mint (Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato) has released a new limited edition coin celebrating the history of the iconic #fiat #500 as celebrations of the model's 60th anniversary continue.

Unveiled today by the Italian Ministry of Economics and Finance, the coin, which has a face value of 5 Euro, was designed by master engraver Claudia Momoni. A total of just 4,000 'uncirculated' coins will be minted, making each a true collector's item.

The obverse depicts the 1957 #fiat #500 and the current model in perspective, surrounding by the words 'Repubblica Italiana'. The reverse shows the unmistakable profile of the classic #500 with the dates 1957 and 2017 - the year the first #fiat #500 was produced and the year the coin was minted - as well as the coin's face value of 5 Euro.

The coin - a real miniature work of art celebrating the realisation of a great dream of mobility and freedom - also bears the initial 'R', showing it was minted in Rome, and the name of the engraver alongside a #fiat #500 logo in the style of the original advertising posters.

The release of the coin is just the latest in a long line of celebrations marking the #fiat 500's 60th birthday and comes just months after another important institutional occasion when a commemorative stamp was launched by the Italian Post Office.

The 500's global importance and reputation as a true icon of design was also recognised with its addition to the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. Meanwhile, the model's enduring ability to generate excitement was captured in Fiat's first short movie, 'See You In the Future', starring Oscar®-winning actor Adrien Brody and an original #500 alongside the #500 Anniversario special edition. To date the video has been viewed about 19 million times.

Enthusiasts, collectors and members of the public also joined the celebrations as a '500 Forever Young' tour visited beautiful squares across Europe.

During its 60-year history, the #fiat #500 has improved the everyday life of millions of people. Its production was an important part of Italy's post-war economic recovery and the car put the nation on four wheels before being exported all over the world. Today, 80% of all #500 cars are sold outside Italy and it is one of Europe's bestselling cars, ranking first in eight countries and among the top three in six more.
