Driving Despite being Disabled – with Opel Ex-factory Mobility Aids

  • Safe situation: New hand controls facilitate driving a car without pedals
  • Highly flexible: Models suitable for drivers with and without physical restrictions
  • Custom-made: Innovative assistance systems and individual options ex-factory

Rüsselsheim.  The ability to drive oneself and be mobile – especially for people with a physical disability, this is an important step towards independence. #opel offers the ideal solutions for this. The latest products in the portfolio are two new hand controls that enable driving without pedals. The mobility aids are already available ex-factory for many #opel models such as #astra, Cascada and Zafira. And the new Insignia will follow soon. The driving aids can simply be ordered when buying a new car at the dealership or selected over the configurator. The customer gets the complete #opel warranty with the order.

The mobility aid Veigel Commander allows physically disabled drivers to operate the turn indicators, lights, horn, and windshield wipers via radio remote control on the hand throttle lever – a significant advancement over the previous system, in which hand controls only replaced the gas and brake pedals. This is also an important safety aspect, as the driver can thus operate all important functions with one hand while keeping the other on the steering wheel. The corresponding steering wheel turning knob facilitates one-handed steering. A further advantage: if, for example, the physically unrestricted partner wants to drive the car, the manual operation controls can be easily folded away, the rotary knob detached from the steering wheel and the pedal cover removed from the footwell. So the #opel model is ready for every driver in just seconds.

The same applies to the new Multima PRO hand control unit from Petri+Lehr. It boasts a very slim design, so that the entire forward adjustment path of the driver's seat is retained. The functions for lights, windshield wipers, horn and turn indicators are controlled over the MFD Touch multi-function turning knob in this model. Thanks to the ergonomically intelligent integration in the steering wheel turning knob, the control panels are always located in the driver's field of vision.

“Simple and safe – this is how every driver, with or without a physical disability, should be able to drive their vehicle. The new ex-factory mobility aids make this much easier. The driver has all important functions under control with one hand. At the same time, the car can easily be converted in just a few seconds so that everyone feels comfortable behind the wheel,” says #opel Managing Director Sales and Aftersales Peter Küspert.

In addition, numerous optional #opel assistance systems ensure an even safer and more pleasant drive. Depending on the model, the state-of-the-art technologies include options such as Park Assist, which automatically steers the vehicle into suitable parking spaces, the Rear View Camera for a better view of the area behind the vehicle, and the Side Blind Spot Alert that indicates vehicles in the driver’s blind spots with an illuminated symbol in the respective side mirror. In addition, there are further radar and camera-based systems such as Traffic Sign Recognition, Forward Collision Alert with automatic emergency braking as well as Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, which gives a visual alert when the car unintentionally veers out of its lane. To prevent accidents, the system gently turns the steering wheel to direct the car back into its lane if necessary. Comfort options such as a stationary heater and a power tailgate make driving a car much easier and more comfortable for people with disabilities.

In addition to the aids and equipment for drivers, together with cooperation partners #opel also offers many solutions for the transport of people in wheelchairs, so for passengers. The spacious Combo, Vivaro and Movano models are particularly suitable for this purpose. Together with the specialists, #opel dealers put together the optimum individual transport solution. Anti-skid ramps and wheelchair lifts with automatic roll-off protection at the platform edge are only a few examples of how passenger safety is ensured even before a journey begins.
