Assen (The Netherlands), 29 April 2017 – The Kawasaki Racing Team rider, Jonathan Rea, took Race 1 in the MOTUL FIM World Superbike Championship on the historic Dutch Assen circuit ahead of his teammate Tom Sykes and Italian Ducati rider Marco Melandri.
This gives the Northern Irishman his sixth win of the season out of a total of seven races held, remaining firmly in the lead of the overall Championship standings.
From Friday, Rea demonstrated that he was competitive, also setting the new track record at 1’33.505 on Saturday morning during Superpole®. However, he was penalized by race marshals and demoted to the fourth spot on the grid after impeding Chaz Davies during his flying lap.
As for the tyre choices for this race, the asphalt temperature was the deciding factor. In fact, with temperatures lower than 20°, until the last moment, the riders were undecided between the standard soft or, alternatively, one of the two SC1 development solutions at their disposal. In the end, a few riders, including Davies and Melandri, opted for the soft SC0. Others, including Rea and Sykes, went with the new SC1 development tyre, but in both cases, the tyres selected performed beautifully, providing consistent performance for the riders all the way through to the end of the race.
Twenty laps to ride in Race 1 for a total of 95.382 kilometres. Chaz Davies (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) started from the second spot on the grid, immediately moving into the race lead ahead of Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team), who had started from pole position, and Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team), penalized by the race marshals from the first to fourth position on the grid after having impeded Chaz Davis on his flying lap during Superpole®. As early as the third lap, the race lost one of its protagonists, hometown hero Michael Van Der Mark (Pata Yamaha Official WorldSBK Team) after a crash. Later, his teammate Alex Lowes was also forced to retire.
The Ducati riding Welshman dominated the race until the twentieth and penultimate lap when he was no longer able to fend off the attacks of Jonathan Rea, who had moved into second place in the meantime. This handed the race lead to the Northern Irishman, but the British Ducati rider stayed glued to his pipes until, just before the start of the final lap, his Ducati had a technical problem and the unlucky rider was forced to retire.
Jonathan Rea therefore won his sixth race out of the seven held thus far ahead of his teammate, Tom Sykes and the other Ducati rider, Italian Marco Melandri, third on the podium.

The Pirelli solutions chosen by the WorldSBK riders for Race 1:
The asphalt temperature was the needle on the scale for the tyre choices in the race up to the last minute, particularly for the rear. In fact, with temperatures lower than 20°C, using a tyre that is too soft can prove to be a choice that is just as risky as it is winning, because the tyre is working at the minimum limit of its operating temperature with possibilities of cold tearing, in other words, tears and loss of pieces of tread due to excessively cold asphalt. Despite this, thanks to the constant development work done by Pirelli, the riders who chose this tyre had no problems.
As for the rear, most of the riders opted for the new V1199 SC1 development tyre (solution C), tested for the first time ever during the official tests at Motorland Aragón. Opting for the standard soft solution (option A), on the other hand, were Ducati riders Davies and Melandri, as well as Torres, Hayden, Camier and De Rosa. Bradl, Russo, Ramos and Laverty were the only ones who chose the W0051 SC1 development solution (option B).
The front tyre choices were much more varied: Ducati riders Davies, Melandri and Forés used the SC3 (option E), in other words, the hardest standard solution, but the most popular choice was the V0952 SC1 development solution (option C) which was used by, among others, Rea and Sykes. The standard SC1 (option A) and the standard SC2 (option D) were also quite popular, both chosen by five riders each. Only Russo and Badovini decided instead to rely on the V1271 SC1 development solution (option B).
